In 2007 Dee Cee Upholstery won a prestigious contract to re-upholster the Mayflower Theater's original 500 seats in the top balcony. News of the contract was featured in the Southampton Daily Echo with the Headline 'Race Against Time'.
The Mayflower was built in the 1920s and is actually owned and run as a registered charity – The Mayflower Theatre Trust. As Michael Caine said: "Not a lot of people know that." Approximately 7,500 screws and bolts were used along with 450 metres of contract quality heavy-duty fire retardant Dralon® velvet. As well as the seats Dee Cee had to refit 500 arms and 500 polished wooden seat base covers. They also supplied 100 booster seats in the same velvet for kids to sit on.
You may have wondered what makes the seats tip up automatically... The answer is quite simple – a solid lump of cast iron, shaped like a banana is fitted at the back of the seat under the high-density, fire retardant foam.
The job was finished 2 days early, in time for the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang production.
